Projected Diptych
Mixed media poster, silk pillowcase, and MadMapper

Above my bed, there's a pastel drawing of the backyard where I used to live. The poster has varying textures that I thought would be cool to project on top of. Directly below that drawing is my pillow, which currently has a silk pillowcase on it, and I was curious to see how that would react to the light projection. The silk made the projection more glowy. I tried to take photos of the projection while a low light was on, and how that changed the whole experience.

The static image of the lit-up building on top of the pastel drawing was one of the most exciting parts. That altered my perception of the drawing, almost making it three-dimensional. I ended up using an image of a road with all these organic asphalt lines on it for my pillow. The two together created a city scene where you could look up and see a building, and look down and see the road.

For this assignment, I projected on the side of one of the engineering buildings at Brown. The building had two differing metal textures that I was excited about. There was vertical corrugated metal and then some rusted tiles to the right. I used text I found during the class's scavenger hunt: a fountain that read “come hither every one that thirsteth” in an interesting font. I traced the image on my iPad, converted it to a PNG, and then imported it into MadMapper. Building off of my last project, I wanted to continue playing with a textured surface.

The words that I chose, I felt, offer comfort and a solution to a need. As it was my first semester of grad school, I had been thinking about education, specifically higher education, as an alluring promise to meet a need or provide comfort. I think the font is very cool, but also kind of old-timey and creepy, which started to pull out the negative sides of higher education to me(money, tokenization, exclusivity). The image is washed with blue, coming from the blue emergency light nearby. I found that this added an additional eerie layer.
